It was only one possession,
\nWhy must my coach scream,
\nMy poor defense permitted the basket,
\nBut what can one hoop mean?<\/p>\n
As the pass comes my direction,
\nAnd I fumble it into the stands,
\nThe coach’s voice rings loud and clear,
\n“Catch with your eyes and hands!”<\/p>\n
C’mon coach, its a single possession,
\nOur team will be okay,
\nIt’s just the first two minutes,
\nMy gosh, we got all day.<\/p>\n
At the 2nd quarter mark I remember,
\nThat the center is strong and stout,
\nA putback for two, quite simply due,
\nTo my failure to turn and blockout.<\/p>\n
But it was only one possession,
\nI didn’t commit a crime,
\nMy team is ahead and I’m playing well,
\nAnd there’s still plenty of time!<\/p>\n
As the halftime buzzer is sounding,
\nAnd I watch the ball bank in,
\nI know I will hear from my loving coach,
\nOf my questionable effort to defend.<\/p>\n
But it was only one possession,
\nCoach – don’t have a heart attack!
\nWe’re down by one, but were having fun,
\nI know we’ll get the lead back!<\/p>\n
The second half mirrors the first,
\nBut it’s early, it’s not a big deal
\nThat my failure to use a pass fake
\nResults in an unlikely steal.<\/p>\n
But quickly I sink a jumper,
\nI’m greeted by high fives and slaps,
\nbut the next possession I give up a layup,
\nwhile suffering mental lapse.<\/p>\n
But its only one possession,
\nC’mon coach, chill out.
\nIt’s crazy to see you disgusted,
\nAs you slap the assistant and shout.<\/p>\n
“Victory favors the team making the fewest mistakes.
\nSingle possessions are the key.
\nSo treat them like gold and do as you are told.
\nAnd play with intensity.”<\/p>\n
I step to the line for one and one,
\nBut I’m having a concentration lapse.
\nThe ball soars through the air – Good Lord, it’s a brick!
\nI’m afraid the support will collapse.<\/p>\n
In post game I sit at my locker,
\nPondering what more I could do.
\nI realize the value of each possession,
\nwhat a shame that we lost by two.<\/p>\n
